چکیده

Fracture of the pelvis is a common injury from falls or road traffic accidents. Review of 206 cases admitted to the Bristol Royal Infirmary from 1960 to 1965 showed that most of the fractures were not severe and that disruption of the pelvic ring occurred in only 19 per cent (Table I). There was a mortality rate of 58 per cent, but in only one case was death directly caused by the fracture : this patient died during operation from uncontrolled haemorrhage after receiving twenty-one pints of blood (Case 2). Eleven other patients died of causes unrelated to the fractured pelvis (Table II).

Bilateral Variation of Internal Iliac Artery

Understanding anatomical variations can help physicians achieve better results in clinical practice. During routine dissection, we found variations in the branches of Internal Iliac Artery (IIA) of a 65-year-old Iranian female cadaver. The IIA ended by dividing to an unusual smaller anterior and a greater posterior trunk which was branched to the inferior gluteal arteries. Both pelvis and the u...

Internal iliac artery injury in a fractured pelvis.

This is a case of an 8 year-old boy who suffered a severe road traffic accident (RTA) with multiple fractures of the pelvis and right femur together with rupture of the urethra. After initial stabilization, he presented one month later with a large pseudoaneurysm of the left internal iliac artery. The patient underwent successful laparotomy, evacuation of the hematoma and ligation of the injure...

Internal Iliac (Hypogastric) Artery Ligation

The historical background of ligature of the internal iliac artery for the control of hemorrhage is not clear1. Numerous publications have attributed the procedure to different surgeons in diverse specialties worldwide2–4. In the United Kingdom and the United States, the operation was reported before 1900 and, since then, many surgeons have practiced it and found it useful. Howard Kelly first p...

A Rare Variation in Branching Pattern of the Internal Iliac Artery: A Case Report

Internal iliac artery (IIA) shows frequent variations in its branching pattern. We saw variations in the branching pattern of right IIA in a male cadaver. The IIA divided into anterior and posterior divisions. The branches of the anterior division included umbilical artery, inferior vesical artery, obturator artery. The other branches arose from posterior trunk such as iliolumbar, lateral s...

Temporary Arterial Balloon Occlusion of Internal Iliac Artery to Control Hemorrhage after Pelvic Trauma

Angiography has been widely used to identify the source of hemorrhage. Hemostasis with temporary balloon occlusion is used occasionally to control hemorrhage. This technique provides an effective and safe choice rather than surgical intervention. We report a 7-year-old girl with traumatic pelvic fracture. Massive vaginal bleeding developed on the 6th day of hospitalization. Hypovolemic shock wa...
